MARVELOUS
MANGOS! The "Perfect" Fruit.
There are more than 1,000 different varieties of mangos in
the world, but only 5 major commercial varieties are marketed
in the U.S. today: Tommy Atkins, Haden, Kent, Francine &
Ataulfo.
Mangos are grown year around so you may be able to find them
in your produce department any time! Costs vary throughout
the year but are somewhat consistent in Summer, when there
is an abundance of fruit from Mexico.
Considered
the perfect fruit, mangos are an excellent source of
vitamins A and C, potassium, beta carotene, are low in calories
and fat-free.
Mangos contain an enzyme that is similar to the papain found
in fresh papayas, and helps to soothe the stomach. Rich in
vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, the enzymes contained
in fresh mangos act as a digestive aid and provide a feeling
of contentment - mangos make you feel good!
The fiber content in an average mango represents 4% of the
daily fiber requirement. Daily fiber helps strengthen the
heart, lowers blood cholesterol levels, and may, according
to research, help prevent certain types of cancers.
People who are physically active can replenish lost potassium
by eating fresh mangos.
Very high in antioxidant Vitamin A.

Select
mangos that have a strong aroma at the tip. Should be
somewhat firm and yield slightly to the touch. Mango connoisseurs
like mangos that have begun to shrivel a sign of
maximum sweetness.
Store unripe mangos on your countertop until
ripe. Store ripened fruit in your refrigerator.
How to Serve: Slice each side of the mango vertically
along the seed to give two halves and pull them apart.
Hold one mango half peel-side down and score the fruit
down to the peel (but not through it) in a tic-tac-toe
fashion. Hold the scored portion with both hands and
bend the peel backward so that the diamond-cut cubes
are exposed. Cut cubes off peel, then remove any remaining
fruit clinging to the seed.
Use mangos in fruit shakes and smoothies,
in fruit salad
or yogurt. Top a bagel with low-fat cream cheese and
sliced mangos. Or try one of our many recipes
for fresh mango!
